Comets Baseball Opens up Season with a Pair of Wins Over Missouri Valley College

Marshall, MO – Mayville State Comets Baseball kicked off their 2026 campaign with a pair of wins against Missouri Valley College on the road Friday.

The Comets took down the Vikings in a thrilling game one, where they trailed 9-13 entering the top of the 7th but came roaring back, scoring 5 wins and winning the game 14-13.

The hot bats would continue into game two, where the Comets scored 15 runs on 11 hits and got the 15-1 win.

"This was a good start to the season for us. There are a lot of things I could highlight but I am just very happy about how we continued to fight through game one offensively," said head coach Billy Tomblin. "It was far from our best performance on the mound but those guys will be fine, Garret has proven to be a dominate arm and it just wasn't his day."

Game 1: W 14-13
The Vikings struck first, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first off of a wild pitch.

Things would be quiet until the top of the 3rd, where the Comets scored 4 runs on three hits. Three of those runs came from Jalen Denton's 1 out home run.

The bottom of the 3rd inning got messy for the Comets. They gave up 4 walks and a hit by pitch, allowing the Vikings to score 6 runs on 2 hits.

Heading into the top of the 4th, the Comets trailed 4-7, but would make it a 6-7 game scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. The Vikings answered back with another pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th, extending their lead 9-6.

With 2 outs in the top of the 5th, Cameron Goff and Kevin Conway are able to drive in a couple runs to make it a 9-9 game

Missouri Valley struck back yet again in the bottom of the 5th, plating 3 runs on 3 hits, one being a solo home run. Vikings led 12-9 and plate another run in the bottom of the 5th to make it 13-9.

With the Comets last chance in the top of the 7th, Juan Villareal is able to reach third on a Vikings error. Robert Gurney hit a single to left and Goff smoked a 3 run home run over the left field fence to get the Comets within 1 run.

Conway drew a 1 out walk and Denton then hit his second home run of the day, giving the Comets a 14-13 lead.

Tyler Boden shut the Vikings down in the bottom of the 7th, sealing the win for the Comets.

Cameron Goff was 3-3 with 6 RBIs and Jalen Denton was 2-4 with 5 RBIs to boost Mayville State's offense.

Game 2: W 15-1
Kevin Conway put the Comets on the board first with a 1 out RBI in the top of the first.

Mayville State scored 6 runs on 5 hits in the top of the 6th to extend their lead to 7-0. The hot offensive inning was powered behind Jalen Denton & Zach Evanochko's back-to-back home runs.

The Comets would plate 3 more runs before the Vikings would manage to score one run on the bottom of the 5th.

Entering the top of the 7th, with the scored 10-1, the Comets decided they weren't done yet. They scored 5 runs on 5 hits and they strung together 3 walks and 1 hit by pitch.

Jalen Denton led the Comets with 5 RBIs; he was 1-2 with a BB and a 3 run home run.  9 different Comets had hits in the game.

Sebastian Mizener started on the mound for the Comets. He pitched a full 5 innings sprinkling in 4 hits, just 1 run, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.

Carson Steinmetz came in relief in the 6th inning, tossing 2 full innings, giving up no runs, just 1 hit and 1 walk and tallied 3 strike outs.

"We have not dominated a game like we did in game two today in a long time," added Tomblin. " We pitched it, we swung it, we took care of the ball - still far from what we have the ability to be but a big step in the right direction for this group."
