Comets Sweep Vikings in Opening Weekend

Marshall, Mo. - Mayville State Comets Baseball looked to build on their hot bats from Friday in their third and fourth games against Missouri Valley College on Saturday. Though the offense wasn't as high, the Comets managed to get 2 more wins, getting the sweep over the Vikings.

"Overall on the weekend I think the glaring piece for me was that we showed some resiliency, that's something we have not shown in a long time so it was good to see that.," said head coach Billy Tomblin. "A lot we need to cleanup, a lot of work still needing to be done but I am happy for the guys and their efforts this weekend."

Game 1 - W 4-1
The Comets got on the board first in the second inning after Marshall Judisch hit a one out single to left field, scoring Jack McQueen who had led the game off with a double.

The Vikings responded immediately in the bottom of the second after they hit a 1 RBI double after they led off the inning with a single and drew a walk to put two runners on.

The game would remain tied until the top of the 7th when Zachary Evanochko hit a 3 run home run over the right field fence. Kevin Conway and Jalen Denton had back to back 2 out singles to get on the base path.

Aleks Koppel started on the mound for the Comets, throwing 5 complete innings, sprinkling just 6 hits and allowing just 1 run. He also struck out 8.

Jack Anotnio closed for the Comets, pitching two scoreless and hit less innings in the 6th and 7th.

"Not quite the offensive games yesterday Friday was, but that's baseball. I thought Aleks was good on the mound for us, we turned it over to Antonio late and he was really good," added Tomblin. "We strung a few things together offensively late and Nacho hit the bomb to put us up and get the win."

Game 2 - W 4-3
Missouri Valley struck first, plating 2 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the first.

It would take the Comets bat a couple innings to get going, but they tied the game in the top of the third with a SAC fly from Conway and an RBI single from McQueen to make it 2-2.

Both teams would remain scoreless until they each scored a run in the 5th, keeping it tied 3-3.

The pitchers would do a great job keeping runners off the base path, pushing the game into extras.

The Comets only needed the 8th inning. With two outs, Villarreal in an RBI single to centerfield, giving the Comets a 4-3 advantage.

Marshall Judsich entered the mound in the bottom of the 8th, shutting down the Vikings and giving the Comets their 4-0 sweep of Missouri Valley.

"Game four was again very quiet on the offensive side, niether team really could get anythign going. We played some musical chairs defensivelya s well as on the mound that utlimately led to Judisch coming in and closing the door," said Tomblin.

The Comets will head to spring break next weekend in Florida where they will play 10 games in 7 days.
