HASTINGS, NEB. — The Mayville State women's basketball team opened its 2025–26 season Friday night on the road visiting No. 12 ranked Hastings College Broncos where they fell 66-89. 

Hastings came out firing, establishing control early with a 22–9 first-quarter lead. The Broncos' defense set the tone, forcing difficult shots and limiting Mayville State's rhythm on offense. Despite improved scoring in the second quarter, the Comets trailed 46–27 at halftime.

The third quarter proved decisive as Hastings exploded for 34 points, stretching the margin beyond reach. The Comets showed fight in the final frame, outscoring the Broncos 23–9, but the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Whitney Welk led Mayville State with 16 points, including three three-pointers, while Hannah Stark added 11 points and nine rebounds. Misti Zempel contributed 10 points and nine boards in a balanced effort for the Comets.

As a team, Mayville State shot 37.5 percent from the floor and 26.3 percent from beyond the arc.
