DES MOINES, Iowa — The Mayville State Comets traveled to face the (RV) Grand View Vikings Saturday afternoon, falling in a challenging non-conference match up.
From the opening tip, the Vikings set the tone with an aggressive offensive pace and disciplined execution, while the Comets fought to find consistency at both ends of the floor. Grand View outscored the Comets 22-3 in the first quarter.
In the 2nd and 3rd quarters, the Comets outscored the Vikings, and eventually came within 9 in the 4th quarter.
On the offensive side, the Comets managed to generate opportunities, moving the ball and showing glimpses of their potential. Newcomers on the squad logged valuable minutes, and the veteran core chipped in when called upon.
Defensively, Mayville State showed hustle, particularly in transition situations and in battling for rebounds. That said, Grand View's ability to stretch the floor, control the boards and convert inside-out consistently created separation late in the first half. Turnovers hurt the Comets at key moments, allowing the Vikings to flip momentum and build a cushion.
"I thought we showed some grit and resolve in our two losses. Coming off a lopsided loss in Hastings and then starting off the 1st quarter against Grand View down 3-22, it would have been easy to fold and we didn't. We wont the 2nd and 3rd quarters and tied the 4th," said head coach Ryan Carpenter. "I'm proud of the effort and grown that we showed this weekend. As a friend recently told me, we just have to keep getting 1% better each day and we will hopefully get to see that difference stack up as the year goes on."
The Comets will hit the road again on November 5th, heading to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on Mount Mercy. Tip off is scheduled for 4:00pm. For full schedule results visit:https://msucomets.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule
