Mayville State Outlasts Mount Mercy 72–65 in Gritty Road Win

Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Mayville State picked up its first victory of the season Wednesday afternoon on the road, defeating Mount Mercy 72–65 at the Hennessey Rec Center.

After a sluggish first quarter that saw both teams struggle to find rhythm, Mayville State built a steady lead behind the shooting of Laela Jensen and Hannah Stark. The Comets held Mount Mercy to just 4 points in the opening period, taking a 13–4 lead that would hold through much of the contest.

Jensen poured in 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and nailed three triples, while Stark added 16 points and 7 rebounds, including several key buckets in the fourth quarter to stop Mount Mercy's comeback attempts. Off the bench, Bella Kanz provided a crucial inside presence with 15 points and 9 rebounds, helping Mayville State dominate the glass with a 52–37 rebounding edge.

Mount Mercy clawed back late, and a 32-point fourth quarter kept the Mustangs within striking distance, but the Comets' composure at the free-throw line sealed the win — the Comets hit 20 of 25 from the stripe (80%).

Mayville State's defense frustrated Moun Mercy throughout, forcing 18 turnovers and limiting the Mustangs to just 33.8% shooting from the field. The Comets also outscored Mount Mercy 32-18 in the paint.

Despite a late push that cut the lead to five with under a minute remaining, Jensen, Walker, and Stark combined for clutch free throws to close the game.

Laela Jensen led the way with 18 points, 3 assists & 3 steals. Following by Hannah Start with 16 points and 7 rebounds and Bella Kanz with 15 points and 9 rebounds.

The Comets return home Friday night for their home opener against Minot State. Tip off is set for 5:40pm in the Lewy Lee. For full schedule details visit: https://msucomets.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule
