Madison, S.D. — Mayville State traded baskets early and put together a good showing early but a second-half surge from Dakota State pushed the Trojans past the Comets, 93–67, on Friday night at the DSU Fieldhouse in Madison.
Christian Bowen-Webb set the tone with 10 first-half points, knocking down a pair of threes and attacking the lane in transition.
Darius Brant added seven points before halftime, and
Amon Moore sparked the Comets with a fast-break layup off a steal as Mayville fought to stay within range.
The Comets shot 40.7 percent in the opening period and played confidently, but Dakota State countered with hot perimeter shooting and a decisive 19–5 run late in the half to take a 46–27 advantage into the break.
Mayville State responded well out of the locker room, scoring 40 points in the second half, a mark highlighted by a standout performance from
Malik Siggers, who scored 18 after halftime on 6-of-9 shooting with three three-pointers. Bowen-Webb added another seven, finishing with 17 points to lead Mayville's starters.
The Comets continued to compete on the glass and in transition, generating 12 second-chance points and 38 points off the bench. Brant and Siggers combined for 27 points, while
Ollie Fell chipped in six rebounds and a pair of free throws. Freshman forward
Isaiah Smith added four points, five boards, and a block in 20 minutes.
Dakota State's efficiency proved the difference. The Trojans shot 50.8 percent from the field and hit 10 three-pointers, led by a 28-point outburst from Nathan Ojukwu, who went 10-for-16 and knocked down four threes.
Mayville State briefly narrowed the margin to 16 early in the second half following a Bowen-Webb three-pointer, but the Trojans answered with a series of transition baskets and regained control.
