Elkhorn, Nebraska - The Mayville State Comets baseball team looked to bounce back Tuesday after two close losses to Mounty Marty. The Comets would take on another GPAC opponent, the Morningside Mustangs who had lost just one game all season.
"Tuesday we had the opportunity to shake it out with a really good Morningside team. No disrespect to anyone we have played but they were the most complete team we have seen in our 16 games," said head coach
Billy Tomblin. "We started the day in a tough spot giving up 9 runs in the first inning but we were able to settle in on the mound and hold them to just 3 runs the remainder of the game. Had a few guys get on the mound who haven't had a lot of opportunities and I felt they did a good job. Game two, we dropped 4-6, but we started to finally play a little more like the team we saw last weekend, we just ran out of time."
Game 1: L 12-3
- Morningside has an explosive first inning, scoring 9 runs on just 2 hits, 7 BBs and a Comet error
- The Mustangs add to their lead with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd off of 5 hits, 12-0 Morningside
- The Comets struggle offensively with ust 2 hits after 4 complete innings
- Mayville State is able to plate 2 runs in the top of the 5th after
Riley Rankin leads things off with a double and
Jalen Denton smacks a 2 run home run to centerfield
- With 2 outs in the top of the 7th,
Chris Shopbell drove in
Brock Barlow with a single to left
- That would be all for the Comets, and the Mustangs would get the win 12-3
Game 2: L 4-6
- Comets come out of the gate scoring 4 runs on 3 hits in the top of the 1st inning
- Mustangs immediately respond, putting up 3 themselves; 4-3 Comets
- Morningside puts up 2 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd to take the lead 5-4
- Offense would be quiet for both teams the rest of the game
- Morningside tacked on one more run to put the up 6-4 in the 6th and hold their lead for the win

"Not the way we wanted the trip to go, going 0-4. We have a longer than wanted layff now but it gives us some time to hopefully clean up some mistakes from this four game road trip," added Tomblin. "I do appreciate the players rolling with everything over the last 5 days, it's not an easy thing to do to sit inside a hotel room for 48 hours, take some sings out in the grass lot in front of the hotel, not sure if or when you play, and then have to go out and compete against two quality opponents. I knwo guys are not in the business of excuses and they are not happy with how things went so we are all excited to get back home and get back to work."
