Moorhead, Minn. — Mayville State Comet Football hit the road for this first time this season, taking on the Concordia College Cobbers at Jake Christiansen Field in Moorhead. Defense would be the name of the game for both teams, but the Cobbers claimed the 17–6 victory over the Comets after a late second half push.
"This was a great non-conference game for our guys to play in and it helped us prepare for Frontier Conference play," said head coach Rocky Larson. "It was an awesome atmosphere with how many Comet fans came out and it was heard by our kids."
The first half was a defensive battle, with both offenses struggling to sustain drives. The Comets broke the scoreless deadlock late in the second quarter when kicker Bryson Heck drilled a 28-yard field goal, giving Mayville State a 3–0 halftime lead.
After halftime, the Cobbers found a bit more rhythm, connecting for an 11-yard touchdown strike midway through the third quarter, putting Concordia ahead 7–3. Heck answered with a 24-yard field goal to trim the margin to 7–6, but that was as close as Mayville State would get.
"Bryson Hitting his first two field goals of his career, that's a nice addition to know we have points in the redzone," added Larson.
The Cobbers would kick a short field goal in the final minutes sealing the 17–6 win over the Comets.
The Comets' offense couldn't find traction against Concordia's defense, managing just 162 total yards. Landon Olson led led Mayville State on the ground with 66 yards, while Isaiah Smith added 49. Passing was limited, with the team completing only two passes for 47 yards.
"We are not into moral victories, so we need to find a way to get that game into the win column," added Larson. "We will spend the next 24 hours studying what needs to be fixed and prepare for the next two weeks where we will travel 4600 miles."
Mayville State will look to regroup and spark its offense next week as they have another road game, taking on Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, September 13th at 1:00pm.
