MOORHEAD, Minn. — Valley City State State used a strong offensive showing in every quarter to pull away from Mayville State as the Vikings defeated the Comets 100–57 in women's basketball action on Friday afternoon.
Mayville State stayed competitive early, trailing just 24–18 after the first quarter. Laela Jensen helped pace the Comets early, attacking the basket and knocking down shots to keep MSU within striking distance.
Valley City State began to separate in the second quarter, outscoring Mayville State 26–10 to take a 50–28 lead into halftime. The Vikings capitalized on turnovers and converted second-chance opportunities to build momentum before the break.
The Comets responded in the third quarter, scoring 18 points in the frame.
Jensen continued to lead the offense, finishing with a team-high 18 points, while Misty Zempel added 12 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers. Despite the effort, VCSU maintained control and carried a 72–46 advantage into the final period.
Valley City State closed the game with a 28-point fourth quarter.
Mayville State shot 28.1 percent from the field and went 5-of-21 from three-point range, while converting 20 of 23 free throws. Hannah Stark added eight points and eight rebounds, and Taylor Hill contributed defensively with two blocks.
