MAYVILLE, N.D. - A tough third quarter proved costly for the Mayville State women's basketball team as the Comets fell 87–66 to Providence (Mont.) on Friday evening inside Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
Mayville State stayed within striking distance through the first half, trailing 39–31 at the break after matching Providence's shooting stretches with timely perimeter scoring. However, the Argos seized control in the third quarter, outscoring the Comets 24–10 to open up a commanding lead that Mayville State was unable to overcome.
Despite the setback, the Comets showed resilience down the stretch, winning the fourth quarter 25–24 and continuing to compete until the final horn.
Jolie Martinson paced Mayville State with a team-high 15 points off the bench, knocking down three shots from beyond the arc and providing an offensive spark throughout the night.
Laela Jensen added 12 points while Hannah Stark chipped in 11, as the Comets shot an efficient 48 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range.
Taylor Hill contributed across the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while the Comets' bench accounted for 22 points.
The Comets fall to 1-11 overall and 0-8 in Frontier Conference play. They will get a crack at another Montana team on Saturday as they host Montana State University-Northern who is recieving votes in the top 25 national poll. Tip off is set for 5:00pm.
