The Mayville State University Homecoming activities continued on Saturday, October 9, 2010 as the Comet football team played host to the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks. Dickinson (6-0, 4-0) came into Jerome Berg field as the 10th ranked team in the NAIA.
Dickinson State made it quite clear what their game plan was in this contest from the outset. The Blue Hawks ran the ball 44 times for 225 yards on the day controlling the clock and keeping the Comet offense off the field.
Rashad Williams led the Blue Hawk rushing attack with 14 carries for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Jackson Wandler also found the end zone on the ground to add to his 5 carries and 27 yards rushing.
Quarterback Cody Holland threw for 150 yards and one touchdown on the afternoon. Jimmy Smith caught Holland's only touchdown on a 52-yard score to go along with his three catches for 65 yards.
Mayville State was hit heavy by the injury bug this afternoon with three starters watching from the sidelines with injuries. Running back Mitch Ford, linebacker Matt Bass, and defensive back
Dominique Bradley were out of the line-up for this game.
The Comet Offense was led by quarterback Tanner Carpenter who completed 15 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. Carpenter faced a lot pressure by an aggressive Blue Hawk defense all afternoon. His favorite target today was Taylor Kunkel who hauled in 5 passes for 56 yards. Carpenters lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter to Brandon Sloan who made a nice catch in the flat before making two defenders miss en route to the end zone.
Defensively the Comets had another big game out of Senior Clifton Krotz whose 14 tackles led the team. Krotz also had 1.5 tackles for a loss and was all over the field for the Comet defense. Juan Enriquez had 8 tackles in the game at linebacker for the Comet defense. The Comet defense was able to force one turnover when defensive back Josh Jeffries recovered a Blue Hawk fumble in the third quarter.
Dickinson State got a good game out of defensive lineman Seth Forster. Forster was in on 5 tackles and got to the quarterback twice for sacks in the game. Dakota Holland also had five tackles for the Blue Hawks.
Next action for Mayville State (1-5, 0-4) is next Saturday, October 16, 2010 as they travel to Jamestown to take on the Jimmies.
