Vikings Too Much for Comets

Valley City State dominated both sides of the ball Saturday afternoon as the Vikings rolled to a 58-0 shutout of Mayville State on VCSU's Homecoming Weekend.
Valley City State's defense held Mayville State to just nine total yards in the first half, and the Viking offense scored four first-half touchdowns to build a 30-0 lead at the break en route to the blowout victory.

Mayville State drops to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play. VCSU improves to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the North Star Athletic Association.

The Vikings set the tone early. After Mayville State won the coin toss and elected to receive, the Viking defense forced a three-and-out – one of seven three-and-outs forced by VCSU in the first half. Five plays later the Viking offense struck as Louis Quinones broke off a 49-yard touchdown run to put the Vikings on the board.
The Comets had seven first-half drives, but failed to gain a single first down against VCSU's dominating defense. VCSU held Mayville State to nine total yards on 20 first-half plays.

Valley City State's offense scored on five of its first six possessions. A Landon Arredondo field goal made it 10-0 and then quarterback Jalen Pfeifer capped two of the next three drives with touchdown passes to Jake Peterson (30 yards) and Eli Luna (32 yards). VCSU then finished the half with a nine-play, 65-yard drive, ending with a 13-yard touchdown from Pfeifer to Peterson with 17 seconds remaining.

The Vikings added four more touchdowns in the second half for the 58-0 victory.

VCSU's defense limited Mayville State to nine first downs in the game and just 141 yards of total offense on 60 plays. Mayville State gained only 19 yards rushing on 29 carries. Valley City State picked up 25 first downs and 546 yards of offense. The Vikings rushed for 273 yards on 47 carries, and had 273 passing yards on 24 attempts.
The Viking defense forced five turnovers – intercepting three passes and recovering two fumbles – and sacked the Comets five times. Valley City State did not turn the ball over and was sacked just once.

Quarterback Jalen Pfeifer passed for 242 yards and four touchdowns, going 13-for-23. Keifer Langan came off the bench in the fourth quarter and threw one pass – a 31-yard touchdown strike to Marc Wagner. Louis Quinones had a big game running the football as he racked up 171 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Anthony Logan had 46 yards on 10 carries.

Jake Peterson caught three touchdown passes from Pfeifer, finishing the day with 143 receiving yards and seven catches. Eli Luna and Wagner each had long touchdown catches as well.

Nicholas McBeain led the balanced defensive effort with eight tackles. Jesus Munoz had six tackles and an interception. Travon Smith and Andrew Hanretty each had an interception as well. Tony Ilaoa-Sa'o picked up six tackles for the Vikings while Damion Scandrick had four tackles and forced a fumble.

Mayville State quarterback Creighton Pfau completed 15 of 31 passes for 122 yards and three interceptions. Darrel Wilson had five catches for 47 yards. Preston Hamlette gained 29 rushing yards on 11 carries.
