Comet Football Falls to Blue Hawks in Season Finale

DICKINSON, ND – The Mayville State Comets traveled out to the western part of the state to finish out their regular season against NSAA leader Dickinson State in Dickinson, ND on Saturday. Struggles continued to plague the Comets offense, and the defense was unable to contain one of the top teams in the country. 

Dickinson State started out the first quarter strong with three touchdowns, one passing and two rushing, taking a quick 21-0 lead.  The Comets had a hard time getting their offense going and the defense couldn't contain another onslaught of TD's by the Blue Hawks. DSU went on a big run, scoring another handul of touchdowns: three receiving, one rushing, and an interception score built the lead to 56-0 at the half. 

The scoreboard tamed down a little in the second half for the Comets, as DSU only scored once in each quarater on another pass completion and another run. Nickolas Nelson was able to toss a completion to Hunter McCall for the Comets only score of the game late in the 4th. The final score at the end of the game was 70-7 in favor of the Blue Hawks. 

Leading for the Comets in total yards was quarterback Nickolas Nelson, going 8/24 for 83 yards in passing. Joshua Portillo led the team in total reception yardage with 37 on the day, followed by Hunter McCall with four catches for 30 yards and a touchdown. Rushing leaders for the Comets were Dontaye Rivera with 33 on the ground, followed by Obie Wilder with 30. Total yards for the team were 104 rushing and 85 passing, a 189 yard total compared to the Blue Hawk's total of 516 (263 Rush, 253 Pass).

The Comets finish the first season of Coach Sean Thom's era with an 0-11 record, 0-8 in the NSAA. They will look to rebuild and will work to improve over the off-season for next year.
