Box Score Forest City, Iowa - The Comets Football team traveled to Forest City Iowa to take on the Waldorf Warriors in a North Star Athletic Association clash. Mayville State used a punishing running attack with a stifling defensive effort to break a 10 game losing streak to Waldorf, winning 20-7.
"It was a weird day with high winds and we knew we had to find a way to make it an ugly game. Our run game really stepped up today," said head Coach
Rocky Larson.
The first three drives of the game resulted in three and outs. The Comets struck the first decisive blow, as
Joevontay Clayton grabbed a 35 yard pass from
Tim Salmon to get to the Waldorf 14 yard line.
Salmon kept the ball on the next play and scampered 14 yards in for the touchdown. Brandon Lacombe nailed the extra point to put the Comets up 7-0.
Mayville State locked up the Warriors offense once again and a poor punt gave the Comets great field position in Waldorf territory. Five plays later, Salmon found
Kelby Azure in the end zone from 27 yards out to make the score 14-0.
The Warriors were not able to convert a first down until there were 44 seconds left in the first quarter. They used this drive to get down to the Comets 22 yard line but a big sack by
Richard Shelton put the Warriors back to the 35, where they missed a 52 yard field goal attempt.
Larson also added, "Defensively last time we played we gave up 56 points and today we held them to 7. Our defense was flying around and great job by our defensive staff to make adjustments. Our QB came up with some huge 3rd and 4th down runs today."
The rest of the first half was a battle for field position, and Mayville State went into halftime with a 14-0 advantage.
The Comets received the ball to open the second half, and methodically marched down the field. A late interception prevented any points, but the Comets offense controlled the line of scrimmage and the clock.
The Warriors did take advantage of the turnover and scored on a 44 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 14-7. The Comets countered with a 15 play drive that consumed 10 minutes of game clock and ended with
Mason Ollman rumbling into the end zone from 10 yards out. The extra point was blocked which made the score 20-7 with just under 11 minutes remaining.
Waldorf went on a long drive of their own and got down to the 5 yard line. However, a Waldorf holding call nullified a touchdown run, then the Comets defense stiffened, with
Johnathan Updike and
Bryson Plueger sacking the quarterback on fourth and goal.
The Comets were unable to convert a first down, but the Warriors were forced to exhaust their remaining timeouts. Waldorf got the ball back on their own 43 with 2:12 remaining.
Devon Woods stepped in front of a Waldorf pass at the Comets 28 yard line to seal the win. Two plays in the victory formation and Mayville State defeated Waldorf 20-7.
The Comets dominated in the trenches, keeping the ball for almost 37 minutes of the game. Ollman notched his 2
nd 100 yard game of the season, with 100 yards on the dot and a touchdown. Salmon passed for 93 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 45 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Mayville State held Waldorf to seven points and only 269 yards of offense. Shelton led the way with 8 tackles and a sack. Woods recorded a sack in addition to his interception and Updike and Plueger shared one sack.
"It wasn't pretty, but to go on the road against a good Waldorf team and come out with a W is a great sign for this football team. The kids continue to trust the process and I am so proud of them," added Larson.
The win boosts the Comets record to 2-6, 2-4 in conference play. The Comets return home to face their longtime rival Valley City State next Saturday at Jerome Berg field, kickoff is at 1:00pm.
