Morris, Minn. - Comets Men's Basketball hit the road Tuesday night for a non-conference rematch with the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars.
The game would be a back and forth offensive battle, but the Comets would be able to hold Morris off late in the second half and get the win 78-73. Mayville State beat the Cougars last week in the Lewy Lee 93-54.
"We knew this would be a tough one coming in because it happened to us last year," said head coach
Brandon McGruder. "I thought they played harder for a majority of the game. We did get stops when we needed to and created some points off turnovers late."
Last year the Comets beat the Cougars at home 82-57, but the following week was a nail biter where Mayville State won 80-73 in Morris.
The first half was a back and forth ping pong match until the Comets were able to go on a 8-0 run to close out the second half leading the Cougars 47-38.
Mayville State struggled from the field in the second half, going just 13-37. And despite Morris outscoring them 35-31, the Comets were able to hold off the Cougars and get the road win. They improve to 8-3 overall.
Nick Michaelson had his first career double-double. He had a career high 14 points and a career high 11 rebounds.
Justin Fisher had 20 points and 7 rebounds.
John White, Jr. had 15 points and 5 rebounds.
Overall, the Comets shot 42.6% from the field, 35.3% from behind the arc, and 60.9% at the line.
"We'll have to have a lot better mental focus in preparation for conference play next week," added McGruder.
Mayville State will have a 10 day break before they head down to Bellevue University, where they will take on the Bruins on December 13th at 7:30pm.
