Jamestown, N.D. – The Comet Softball team took on the Viterbo V-Hawks Friday and Saturday for a four game conference series where Mayville State went 2-2.
The series was originally scheduled to be played in La Crosse, Wisconsin but due to weather was moved to Jamestown where they played in the Nelson Family Bubble.
Game 1: W 8-4
The Comet bats were hot as Mayville State would score 8 runs off of 13 hits and score in 4 different innings.
Lindsey Tulla went 1-1, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI, 1 2B, 4 BBs
Mackenzie Iverson went 2-4, 1 run scored, 1 BB
Megan Elliott went 3-4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 2 2Bs, 1 BB
Alyssa Avila went 2-3 with 1 RBI, 1 2B, 2 BB
Kennedy Vettel went 2-2 with 2 runs scored, 2 BB
Emily Haines would start in the circle, pitching a full 7 giving up 4 runs on 6 hits and striking out 2.
Game 2: L 7-8
Mayville State would continue to find baserunners, scoring 7 runs off of 11 hits – all 7 runs were scored in the 3
rd.
However, that wouldn't be enough as Viterbo was able to scatter 8 runs on 13 hits, scoring in 5 of 6 innings.
Megan Elliott would continue to have a stellar day at the plate going 3-4.
Erika Howell's bat would come alive as she went 2-4 with 1 RBI.
Courtney Boll would get the start, giving up 7 runs off of 11 hits.
Lacey Mathiowetz would finish the last 2 innings of the game.
Game 3: L 6-3
It would be an early morning for the Comets, playing an 8:00am game 3.
The Comets wouldn't have a problem finding ways on base, however, 5 errors and stranding 14 on base would have Mayville State fall short 6-3.
Lindsey Tulla went 3-4 with 1 RBI, 1 BB
Megan Elliott went 2-4 with 1 RBI
Miquela Pino went 2-3
Courtney Boll got the start in the circle where she gave up 6 runs on 10 hits.
Game 4: W 7-5
Mayville State would look to get the split by taking game 4 of the series.
The Comets did just that as they were able to put up 3 runs in the first and 3 runs in the second and another in the fourth, winning 7-5.
Viterbo would threaten in the bottom of the 3
rd scoring 5 runs in a row, but the Comets would be able to hold them off and seal the split.
Lindsey Tulla went 2-3 with 3 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 3B, 1 2B
Mackenzie Iverson went 1-1 with 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 2 BBs
Megan Elliott went 2-3 with 1 RBI, 1 BB
Ryanne Bass went 2-3 with 1 RBI, 1 BB
Emily Haines got her second start of the series in the circle where she again found ways to keep her hitters off balance and grab the win.
"Next weekend I expect our defense to play routine softball no matter who is in the circle. I also expect our at bats to advance runners and score runs; putting up 10 hits is useless if we are stranding 14 baserunners," added Olson.
Mayville State will take on Waldorf in another conference match up next weekend. The games are scheduled for home, but upcoming weather could impact the location.
"We know this season was going to be a grind, we'll go back to work next week and keep trying to get better each pitch," said Olson. "There are a lot of behind the scenes and in house things that are going well for us that are unseen and I truly believe these things are going to help us out in the long run."
