BUTTE, Mont. — Mayville State struggled to find offensive rhythm Friday night as the Comets dropped a 78–50 decision to No. 4 Montana Tech at Valley Bank Arena in Butte, Montana.
Montana Tech jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back, building a 38–19 halftime lead behind efficient shooting and strong play in the paint. The Orediggers controlled the glass throughout the contest, out rebounding Mayville State 53–36 and scoring 44 points in the paint.
The Comets showed improved energy in the second half, outscoring their first-half total with 31 points after the break, but were unable to cut significantly into the deficit as Montana Tech maintained control on both ends of the floor.
Isaiah Smith led Mayville State with 16 points, adding nine rebounds and three assists. Ollie Fell provided a spark off the bench, finishing with 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while Christian Bowen-Webb chipped in eight points and two assists.
Mayville State shot 31.7 percent from the field and 20 percent from three-point range.
