Comet men come up short in overtime against D-II opponent Crookston

Larry Brown had a season-high 21 points as he helped the University of Minnesota-Crookston Golden Eagles hold off Mayville State in overtime at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in Mayville, ND.

The Division-II Golden Eagles came into the game off a convincing victory of Finlandia University ready for their second game of the season. Mayville State was fresh off a weekend match-up with the North Dakota State University Bison ready to take on another tough opponent.

The Comets were led in scoring by Shavontae Samuels, who finished with a game-high 33 points, as well as six rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Samuels was steady all night going 11-for-18 from the field, and a solid 8-of-11 from the free throw line. Samuels also knocked down three shots from downtown for the Comets.

Mayville State fell behind in the first half trailing 37-30 at the break. They came out and played tough defense and found themselves right back in the game early in the second half.

As the second half was getting closer to a conclusion the game stayed close, keeping everyone involved on the edge of their seat. With twenty seconds left in regulation the Comets were behind by just one point and on defense. After a near steal the Comets sent Eric Dearden to the free throw line with fifteen seconds left. Dearden missed his first attempt and had to gather himself for the second or the Comets would be shooting for the win. He was able to knock down the second shot and the Eagles were leading 69-67 with fifteen ticks left on the clock.

The Comets went to Samuels for the final possession and after a good screen at the top of the key Samuels got into the lane and sunk a floater of the Eagles big men with six seconds left to tie the game. The Eagles did get down the floor and seemed to have a decent shot for the win but Shavontae Samuels came up with a big block on Jason Shervaty's final attempt as time expired.

In the overtime period the Eagles looked to their leading scorer, Larry Brown, to carry them on offense. Brown had six of his team-high 21 points in overtime.

The Comets had one final shot down by two with fewer than two seconds left. After Eric Dearden split two free throws with the Eagles up by one the Comets took the ball out of bounds with one last chance. Christian Harris threw a full-court pass to Ross Aman at the free throw line resembling the memorable Grant Hill and Christian Laettner play from the 1992 NCAA Final Four. Aman's shot hit just off the front of the rim as time expired, however, to end the game with the final score 78-76 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

Both teams struggled from the free throw line in the game. The Golden Eagles were just 13-of-23 from the line and the Comets knocked down 19-of-29 foul shots.

Crookston had a slight edge on the boards, winning that battle 30-28. Trent Graves and Adam Hendricks each finished with five rebounds to lead the Eagles. Wiley Jiles led the Comets with seven rebounds.

Christian Harris had a solid night for the Comets in this one finishing with 12 points, five steals, and four rebounds. Wiley Jiles also added 12 points to go with his seven rebounds.

The Comets (3-2) have lost their last two games and are looking to get back on the right track. Their next contest will be in Aberdeen, South Dakota when they take another Divison-II opponent, Northern State University.
