Mayville, N.D. - The Mayville State men's basketball team delivered a composed, hard-nosed performance Saturday night, holding off Dickinson State for an 80–76 conference victory at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
The Comets set the tone early, playing with pace and purpose on the offensive end while matching the Blue Hawks' physicality defensively. Mayville State moved the ball effectively in the opening minutes, creating quality looks and establishing a rhythm that carried through much of the first half.
Dickinson State answered with a run midway through the half, but the Comets responded by tightening up defensively and capitalizing on transition opportunities. Mayville State closed the opening half strong with a 33-27 lead over the Blue Hawks.
The second half unfolded as a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to create significant separation. Dickinson State applied pressure and briefly surged ahead behind timely perimeter shooting, but Mayville State kept responding.
Down the stretch, the Comets executed when it mattered most. Mayville State converted crucial possessions late, attacked the basket to draw fouls, and knocked down free throws to maintain its edge.
Christian Bowen-Webb led the way for the Comets with 17 points and 5 assists. He was followed by Ollie Fell who scored 14 points and 7 rebounds. Collectively the Comets shot 52.4% from the field and 23.1% behind the arc while going 11-15 at the line and they scored 40 points in the paint.
The Comets will host Bismarck State College on Monday, January 19th with tip off starting at 2:00pm in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
