A good-sized crowd of Mayville State University fans made the short trek to Crookston, Minn. to watch their Comets take on the University of Minnesota-Crookston in the season opener. Unfortunately, the Comets didn't get the results they were hoping for. MSU fell to the Golden Eagles 37-6.
UMC's offense came out strong, finishing off a 64-yard drive with a 25-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Tim Ennis to Jordan Lecher on the opening possession of the game. And they didn't look back. UMC scored another touchdown and a field goal in the first half of the game to take a 17-0 lead into halftime.
The turning point of the first half came as MSU put together a solid drive and was on the UMC 20 yard line. With MSU knocking on the door of the end zone, UMC put a stop to the drive, coming away with an interception.
The second half wasn't much more kind to the Comets as Minnesota-Crookston continued to put on the offensive pressure. The Eagles started the second half scoring with a 58-yard Keith McBride rush for a touchdown. UMC followed this up with two more touchdowns, including a pass connection to Eric Ogorek that led to a 60-yard touchdown.
The Comets got onto the scoreboard late in the fourth with a pass from quarterback
Tanner Carpenter to
Tony Evenstad to cap off a quick two-play, 22-yard drive.
Carpenter led Mayville State with 31 pass attempts and 10 completions for 117-yards and one touchdown.
Mitch Ford led the rushing effort with 18 carries for 49-yards. Defensively the Comets were led by
Dominique Bradley who tallied nine total tackles.
The Comets are 0-1 on the season and 0-0 in the Dakota Athletic Conference. Their next game will be a non-conference matchup at Trinity Bible College on Saturday, Sept. 11.
