The Mayville State University women's basketball team hit a shot with less than a second remaining to record a dramatic victory over the University of Winnipeg 82-80 and remain undefeated on the 2011-2012 women's basketball season.
After controlling the game for a majority of play, the Comets found themselves in the midst of a Winnipeg comeback in the final minutes that culminated in a banked three-point shot by Winnipeg to tie the game at 80-80 in the final minute. An MSU turnover gave the ball back to Winnipeg and a missed shot on the ensuing break gave the ball back to MSU.
Senior
Megan Groen controlled the ball on the break and tried to pass to fellow senior
Erin Ericson, but the pass was deflected out of bounds with six seconds to play. MSU called a timeout to set up an inbounds play and the ball ended up back in Groen's hand. Groen drove the ball baseline and pulled up for a short jumper that found that bottom of the net with 0.8 seconds left.
Groen led MSU with 21 points in the game followed by 15 points for Ericson.
Hailey Longtin scored nine while Kaye Laforet and
Angela Tauer had eight apiece.
The Comets are now 4-0 on the young season. They will be off for a week before taking on Oglala Lakota College on October 29th.
