This game can only be described one way: A tale of two halves. Mayville State shot the lights out in the first half going 19-for-29 from the field and 9-of-13 from the three-point line. They built a 52-32 advantage over former Comet men's basketball coach Paul Grove and the Minnesota-Morris Cougars.
Grove and his players did not back down as they fought their way back in the second half through timely shooting, tough defense, and conversion at the free throw line.
Gus Kueber kept the Cougars at bay in the late stages of the game. The junior from Aneta, ND came up with big plays down the stretch for Mayville State to preserve the win. Kueber finished the game with 24 points, four rebounds, and four blocks while going 9-for-12 from the field.
Minnesota-Morris found themselves down two, with the ball, with 20 seconds left in the game and a chance to tie. The first free throw dropped through the net leaving the Comet faithful anxious and anticipating overtime. The second free throw hit the back of the rim, bounced high in the air toward the lane when Eric Schulstad grabbed it in traffic. The Cougars weren't able to foul before the time ran out and a jump ball was called as time expired.
Shulstad had an outstanding game for Mayville State. The junior finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. He was feeling it from the three-point line as he was 5-for-9 from beyond the arch.
Brady Robbins stepped into the starting line-up for the injured
Adam Edwards and played well. Robbins scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds in his first start in front of the home crowd.
Minnesota-Morris battled in this game and showed their toughness to get back into the game. They came up short at the final buzzer and went back home with a sour taste in there mouth.
