The Mayville State University men's basketball team hosted Martin Luther College at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse on Friday, December 2
nd, 2011. The Comets held off a late second have surge from the Knights to preserve a four point win by a score of 63-59.
Mayville State came out strong defensively in the first half holding the Knights to just 20 points on 8-of-32 shooting from the floor. The Comets led at the break 32-20.
Martin Luther did not back down in the second half as they chipped away at the lead before tying the game with two minutes left. Mayville State looked to
Gus Kueber down the stretch offensively to make plays. Kueber made some tough shots in traffic as he kept Mayville State alive.
Mayville State found themselves down two points in the final minute of the game. The Comets sent the ball inside to the 6'7" Kueber who made a great pass to Cody Aassness for a three-point shot that went in with 45 seconds left. The shot by Aassness kept the Comets in the lead for the remainder of the game as the Comets came away with the victory.
Offensively the Comets were led by Kueber who scored a team-high 25 points. Aassness followed Kueber with 10 points.
Matt Bauduin was next with nine.
Eric Shulstad was getting it done on the glass for the Comets as he grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team. Kueber followed him in rebounds with seven in the game.
A great stat for Mayville State in this game is their free throw differential. The Comets made more free throws in this game (20) than Martin Luther attempted (19).
This wasn't the prettiest offensive game for either team as both teams shot 35% from the floor. Mayville State held slight advantages in turnover differential, rebounding advantage, and total assists. In close games like this one, little things like that are the difference between winning and losing.
Mayville State University (7-4) will be playing again Saturday, December 3
rd, 2011 for their second match-up with Dakota State University (6-4). The game will be played in Madison, South Dakota. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
