In the final weekend of regular season play the Mayville State University women's basketball team hosted the Jamestown College Jimmies on Friday, February 18, 2011.
The Comets came out playing well defensively holding the Jimmies to 35% shooting from the field in the first half. Mayville State struggled to hit shots from the floor in the first half but stayed in it with solid free throw shooting. The Comets found themselves down at halftime 39-30. In the second half the Jimmies started heating up and were able to pull away winning 80-63.
Kayla Roemmich led the Jimmies in scoring tonight. She came off the bench and finished the night with 15 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes. Bridget Schuneman followed Roemmich with 14 points and Casey Geffre was next with 12 points in the game.
The Comet defense worked hard and forced Jamestown into 20 turnovers in the game.
Kelli Smart and
Kay Laforet were big on defense coming away with three steals each.
Offensively the Comets were led by
Laura Taylor. Taylor scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the contest. Taylor did most of her work at the free throw line going 10-for-13 there. Foul trouble limited her to just 22 minutes on the floor so she did a good job while on the floor.
Kay Laforet followed Taylor with 14 points of her own. The freshman from LaSalle, Ontario Canada played well. Laforet finished with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Junior
Hannah Wenaas finished with 10 points and four rebounds to round out the bulk of the offense.
Hailey Longtin went down early in the first half after a collision caused a cut to open up above her eye. She was back before the end of the half after a few stiches and a bandage was placed on the wound. Longtin finished with nine points on the night.
Rebounding was the big difference in the game. Jamestown was ahead on the glass 41-30 including 12 offensive rebounds.
The Comet women's basketball team plays host to rival Valley City State University on Saturday, February 19th, 2011 in the regular season finale. It is also “senior night” for Mayville State University so it is Kelli Smarts final game as a Comet in the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse.
