Powerful offense leads MSU baseball over Dakota State

The Mayville State University baseball team continued their winning ways this weekend as they traveled to Madison, SD to take on Dakota State University. The Comets took three games out of four from the Trojans behind a high powered offense. MSU had a total of 50 hits to DaSU's 30 and outscored them 34-18 over the series.

Game 1: Mayville State 16 – Dakota State 5 (5 innings)
The MSU offense made a statement to open the weekend's action by knocking in five runs in the top of the first inning. Jake McLain knocked in a two-run homerun to start off the scoring. And the offense didn't slow down after that. The Comets would score in all five innings of the game. Dakota State tried to make a game of it by scoring five runs in the first three innings. But it wasn't enough as the Comets ran away with the game taking it 16-5 in five innings.

Jake McLain led the Comets offense with three hits and five RBIs. Brock Gnadt and Brad Ferraro each contributed three RBIs, Billy Tomblin two and Ricky Alvernaz, Dan Bauer, and James Olderbak each with one.

Game 2: Mayville State 7 – Dakota State 6
The second game of the evening was a much more closely contested game. Dakota State got on the board first scoring two in the first inning. They added another in the third to go up 3-0. But the Comets quickly answered back by scoring six unanswered runs. The Trojans put together a strong rally in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs to tie up the game.

But the Comets weren't going to let this one slip away. After a scoreless ninth, Alex Berry was walked to get on base. Jake McLain would hit an RBI double with two outs to score Berry, which proved to be the game winner.

Tanner Carpenter set the pace for the Comet offense with four hits and two RBIs. Alex Berry, Jake McLain, Brad Ferraro, and Joe Ferreira each had two hits and a RBI.

Game 3: Mayville State 6 – Dakota State 0
Day two saw the bats stay hot for the Comets. MSU would rack up 14 hits in the game and see six different players record a RBI.

Sam Hirchert put together an impressive game on the mound as he recorded his first pitching victory for the Comets. He limited DSU to two hits and struck out five batters.

Game 4: Mayville State 5 – Dakota State 7
Mayville State was looking to finish the sweep of the series as they entered game four of the weekend. But the Trojans would put up a fight and took the final game 7-5 from the Comets. MSU would start off the scoring, putting up a run in each of the first two innings.

But Dakota State scored two in the fourth, and four in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. MSU would score two more in the sixth and one in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as DSU pulled out the close victory.

The four game series moves Mayville State to 14-8 on the season and 6-4 in Dakota Athletic Conference play. Dakota State drops to 3-23 overall and 1-7 in conference. MSU returns to action on Tuesday, April 4 when they take on NCAA DI North Dakota State University.
