Baseball falls in close game to DI NDSU

Mayville State University gave NCAA Division I North Dakota State University all it could handle, but came up short as the Bison edged out the Comets for a 5-4 victory.

The game proved to be an exciting one for the fans that made it to Valley City, where the two teams met to play the game. The Comets took control of the game by scoring in the second and adding two more in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Bison would finally get on the board in the bottom of the fifth with two runs. The Comets would increase their lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh. But NDSU would answer back in the bottom of the inning to tie up the game.

A power outage at the field delayed the start of the eighth inning for 29 minutes. But it didn't stop the excitement of the tie game. NDSU hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the bottom of the ninth to take a 5-4 win over Mayville State.

The MSU offense was led by Ricky Alvernaz, who compiled three hits and an RBI for the Comets. Brad Ferraro and Dusty Brend each contributed another hit and RBI on the evening.

The loss moves the Comets to 13-9 overall on the season. MSU is 6-4 in Dakota Athletic Conference play. The team returns to action on Thursday, April 14 when they head to Moorhead, MN to take on Concordia College in non-conference action.
