Jimmies spoil Farmers Bowl 2011, win 35-13

The annual Mayville State University Farmers Bowl celebration took place today with the main attraction of the day the football game between the home town Comets and the visiting Jamestown College Jimmies.

The action got off to a fast start as the Comets scored on the opening drive of the game with Jake McLain hitting Taylor Kunkel in the corner of the end zone for the first score of the game. The opening drive was very impressive covering 60 yards in 12 plays, and eating up 6:04 off the game clock. The Comets were off to a good start offensively.

Unfortunately for the Comets the Jimmies offense didn't waste any time getting going either as they had a very similar drive going back at the Comets. The Jimmies had a 12-play, 52 yard drive good for 5:54 off the clock on their first possession. Quarterback Brad Lint found Joe McLaughlin all by himself in the end zone for the Jimmies first score of the game.

The Comet offense stalled on their second drive punting after just four plays. A good return by Lance Johansen set the Jimmies up in Comet territory for their second drive of the game. Johansen did a little bit of everything for the Jimmies offense today. Running and catching passes out of the backfield as well as a good portion of the return game kept the Devils Lake native busy.

Jamestown wasted no time as Lint connected with Casey Hausauer over the middle for a 38 yard touchdown on the second play of the drive. After the extra point by Ryan Benke the Jimmies found themselves ahead of Mayville State 14-7 after the first quarter. The Comets got right back to work on offense as the ensuing drive featured a heavy load of Jerrill Jenkins on the ground. Jenkins set the offense up as McLain was able to find Brandon Berger down the middle for a touchdown to get the Comets back into the game. A missed extra point left the score 14-13 in favor of the Jimmies.

Lance Johansen got going as a receiver on the following Jimmies drive as he caught two passes for 35 yards including an 11 yard touchdown on a screen play. Lint had his third touchdown pass of the half and the Jimmies were ahead 21-13 with just under five minutes to play before the break. That score would hold up going into halftime with neither offense getting much going to end the half.

Jamestown was set to receive to start the second half and the Comets needed a big stop from their defense. Lint and Johansen weren't ready to let that happen as they led the Jimmies down the field to take a commanding lead 28-13 early in the third quarter. The drive was capped off by a two yard touchdown run from Johansen.

The defenses did begin to take over the game at this point as neither team managed to put points on the board leaving the score 28-13 at the end of three quarters. The final play of the third quarter saw the Comets throwing a pass in the end zone that was in Kunkel's hands for a brief moment before a Jimmies defender knocked it away on fourth down.

The Jimmies got the ball deep in their own territory and that was when Johansen made the play of the day. The junior took the ball out of the backfield and up the middle 89 yards to put the Jimmies up for good 35-13.
Jenkins run

Johansen finished the day with five catches for 58 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed the ball 10 times for 121 yards and two touchdowns as well as finishing with 24 yards returning punts. He definitely made his mark on the game for the Jimmies offense.  Lint finished the afternoon with 248 yards through the air and three touchdowns.

The Comet offense was led by Jenkins, who finished just shy of another 100-yard game finishing with 97 yards on 23 carries. McLain followed Jenkins with 34 yards on the ground. McLain finished with 77 yards passing and two touchdowns. Berger and Victor Redd each caught three passes for the Comets for 33 and 29 yards, respectively.

The final tally to this game was not very indicative of how competitive the contest was. The Comets were in this game throughout and were a few big plays going their direction away from a much different final score. Jamestown came in and played well, and earned the victory.

Mayville State University is now 3-2 in 2011 and will be on the road to take on Dickinson State University next week in Dickinson, N.D. Kickoff is set for 2:30 PM.
