Kueber's double-double leads Comets past Northern New Mexico

Mayville State University hosted a Sunday night basketball game at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse as they welcomed the Northern New Mexico Eagles to town on January 15, 2012.

The Comets took it to them right off the opening tip as they surged to a 15-0 lead in the first six minutes. At the half the men had a comfortable 42-22 lead.

No lead is safe, however, and the Eagles made a game of it in the second half. The lead was cut to eleven points before Mayville State put the game away.

Gus Kueber showed how versatile his game is in the Comets 83-64 victory over Northern New Mexico. The 6'7 Junior forward finished with 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Kueber scored from all angles as the Eagles couldn't find a way to stop him. He brought the house down with a baseline drive and two handed slam in the second half to spark a Comets run. His presence on the floor was definitely felt.

As a team, the Comets caught fire from the three point line as they cashed in on 10-of-23 attempts. Seven players made three's in the game keeping the Eagles defense off balance.

Eric Schulstad had another solid game for Mayville State University. He finished the night with a game-high 23 points, as well as eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.

Adam Edwards had a nice game off the bench for Mayville State. Foul trouble in the first half limited his playing time but he finished the night with 12 points in 12 minutes on the floor. He shot the ball well going 3-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-5 at the free throw line.

Mayville State University shot very well tonight as the team was 54% (29-for-54) from the floor, 44% (10-for-23) from the three-point line and 71% (15-for-21) at the free throw line.

Mayville State University held the Eagles to shooting just 32% (20-for-62) from the floor as their defense was stellar. The Eagles also committed 18 turnovers in the game as the Comets were plus two in turnover differential.

Mayville State University (11-8) is off until next weekend with the DAC Tip-off tournament in Valley City, North Dakota. The Comets will play the host team, Valley City State University Vikings (16-5) at 4:00 p.m. in the first of three match-ups with their rival.
