Comet Women Come Out Strong in Season Opener

Five Comets hit double figures in season opening rout of Canadian Mennonite

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Comet women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 campaign on Friday night at home with a match-up against Canadian Mennonite University in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets are coming off the most successful season in school history advancing to the NAIA national tournament last season.

The game itself was never close with the Comets racing out to a 77-18 lead at the end of the first half. It didn't get any better for the Blazers in the second half as the Comets outscored their opposition 61-14 in the second half to open up the season with a 138-36 victory.

Ball pressure and ball movement were the two big stories in this game. The Comets forced the Blazers into 32 turnovers with 26 steals. Everyone that played in the game recorded one steal for Mayville State. Kay Laforet and Brooke McNary led the team with four each.

The Comet offense was incredibly balanced in the game. Five players hit double figures with three of those five going over 20. Marcisa McMillan (2012 A.I.I. conference POY) led the team with 28 points and 15 rebounds. McMillan also collected seven blocks and had four assists. She shot 75% from the floor (12-for-16) and was 4-for-5 from the three point line.

Following McMillan was Hailey Longtin and Sabrina Rude each with 22 points. Alyssa Blair scored 19 points (9-for-13) in her Comet debut and Liza Hoglo rounded out the double digit scorers with 15.

As a team the Comets out-shot the Blazers hitting at a .606 percent clip (57-for-94) compared to just .180 percent (9-for-50) for CMU. The Comets also knocked down 12 three point shots in the game. Sabrina Rude (6) and Marcisa McMillan (4) combined for 10 of the 12 makes from beyond the arch.

Mayville State (1-0) is in action again tomorrow when they take on the University of Winnipeg (0-1) at 5:00 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. Winnipeg was defeated earlier today by the University of Jamestown 90-59.
