Comet women's basketball hangs tough with D-1 opponent UND before losing 71-62

McMillan scores 20 points against Big Sky opponent in losing effort.

Grand Forks, N.D. - The Mayville State University women's basketball team got out to a fast start before eventually falling 71-62 to the University of North Dakota of the Big Sky conference  on Wednesday at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

MSU (11-2) jumped on their Division 1 counterparts 9-2 to start the game and held a one point lead before UND took an 11 point lead into the half. Marcisa McMillan led the way Comets with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting in the game.

The University of North Dakota extended their lead to 60-40 in the second half before MSU got their three point game rolling to get back into the game. Throughout the game the Comets knocked down 10 three point shots, five in each half. Sabrina Rude was responsible for half of the made shots from downtown, going 5-for-11.

Liza Hoglo returned to the Betty Englestad for the second time as a Comet and played well. Her 13 points, 10 rebounds was a big boost to the Comets effort against her former squad.

Hailey Longtin wasn't able to get her offense on track in this one, but the senior guard proved to be on her game defensively. She led all players with five steals in the game. Her play was important for the Comets to force 19 UND turnovers in the contest.

The biggest difference in the game for the two teams was the rebounding advantage. UND outrebounded the Comets 60-30. This was due in large part to Mia Loyd who finished with 19 points and a game-high 22 rebounds. That total is tied for second in a single game by a UND player all-time.

Mayville State (11-2) won't be in action again until January 10, 2014 when they travel to Denver, Colorado. They'll play a pair of games that weekend (Jan. 10-11) against Johnson & Wales and Northern New Mexico.
