Lady Comets Roll Past Minnesota-Morris 83-64

MSU connects on 26-of-32 free throw attempts in runaway win.

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Comet women returned home for a match-up with the University of Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday night at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. This is the in between game of the Comets current run of four out of five games away from home.

Liza Hoglo got the Comet offense started as she scored the first nine points for Mayville State. The Cougars traded buckets early and led 8-6 over MSU before the Comets answered with a 13-1 run, forcing a timeout by Tim Grove.

The lead grew slowly throughout the half as Mayville State took a 42-26 lead into the break.

UM-M got their offense going in the second half, but unfortunately for them, the Comet offense didn't slow down. MSU almost matched their first half total with 41 second half points, three better than the Cougars 38 in the second 20 minutes.
Hoglo led the offense with 21 points in the game. She was efficient on offense going 7-for-11 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. The guard also came down with six rebounds and got her hands on four steals.

Hailey Longtin got it going in the second half with 13 of her 15 points coming after the break. Longtin was 5-of-13 from the field, 4-for-5 from the free throw line and added one bucket from downtown for MSU.

Angela Tauer added 12 points for MSU including 2-of-5 from the three-point line (.400) as well as 6-for-8 at the free throw line (.750).

Sam Heier had a nice offensive game with 10 points on 3-for-6 from the field to go along with six assists and two rebounds.

The Comets out-rebounded the Cougars 37-27 with Sabrina Rude leading the way with nine rebounds. Rude also scored nine points in the contest.

MSU was "plus 4" in turnover differential as the team forcing UM-M into 18 turnovers while committing just 14 themselves.

Free Throw shooting was the biggest advantage in this game however. As a team the Comets made more free throws than UM-M attempted. MSU shot 26-for-32 (.813) compared to the Cougars connecting on 11-of-16 (.647) at the charity stripe.

MSU (6-2, 0-0) goes on the road this weekend (Dec. 6-7) to play Ashford University and St. Ambrose University.
