MAYVILLE, N.D. –
Steven Ivory Jr. scored 21 points and corralled 10 rebounds, but the Mayville State men's basketball team fell to Jamestown College 73-70, in overtime at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse on Sunday evening.
Mayville State ends the 2012-13 season with a 9-18 overall record.
Ivory Jr. shot 8-of-16 from the floor to go along with a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Senior
Austin Emerson and Sophomore
Sam Hyman scored 13 points apiece.
Adam Edwards added nine points and
Cody Coauette scored eight.
Breshion Tucker paced JC with a game high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Taylor Newton and Davon Thomas scored 15 points.
Mayville state held a 27-26 lead at halftime and the teams exchanged ties and lead changes throughout the game. In the contest there were 10 ties, and 12 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than seven points at any time in the game.
Mayville State was in desperation mode late in the second half. With the score in favor of the Jimmies at 57-54 the Comets were in trouble with just .5 seconds left on the clock. The Comets came out of a timeout ready to go after overtime. Emerson freed himself on a screen and hit a three point shot before the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
Just like the first match-up, a three point make by the home team at the buzzer extended the game.
Unfortunately for the Comets, just like the first match-up, the road team ended up picking up the victory in the extra session. Jamestown outscored the Comets 16-13 in overtime and got out of the fieldhouse with a gritty road win.
The loss for the Comets ends Coach DeWitt's first season as the men's coach with 9 victories and 18 defeats. The four seniors the team has to replace will not be easy and the program can't thank those four men enough for their efforts at Mayville State University.
The Comets honored four seniors today, which was “Senior Day” for Mayville State men's basketball. Steven Ivory Jr.,
Austin Emerson, Dexter Elliot, and
Cody Coauette are the four seniors that ended their careers today. Ivory and Emerson just joined the Comets this season, Elliot came to the Comets last season and
Cody Coauette has been with the Comets for four seasons.
