No. 18 Lady Comets' Defense Stifles Ashford University 68-48

Marcisa McMillan picks up another double-double in home victory.

MAYVILLE, N.D. – The Comet women's basketball team picked up their 14th win of the season Saturday night thanks in part to a big second half effort against Ashford University at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse.

The Comets and Saints played back-and-forth in the first half and went to the locker room with a narrow 33-29 lead. Ashford came out firing and led the Comets until about the midway point of the first half.

The second half was a different story as the Comets amped up their defense and played with more efficiency on the offensive end. MSU shot the ball at a 53% clip and held Ashford University to 23% from the floor in the second 20 minutes.

Marcisa McMillan recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a 20 point, 10 rebound effort in the game. She shot the ball well from the floor going 9-for-15 for a 60% field goal percentage.

Following McMillan was Sam Heier who scored 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor. Heier connected on one three pointer and knocked in both her free throw attempts for a perfect night shooting the ball.

Liza Hoglo was the third and final Comet with double digit points with an 11 point, six rebound effort for MSU.

Kay Laforet led the way for the Comets in the assists department with seven in the game out of the teams 14.

The biggest advantage the Comets had in the game was shooting percentage. MSU hit 49% (26-for-53) of their shots while Ashford was 31% (18-for-59) from the floor. The Comets also had a rebounding advantage of 33-30.

The Comets next action will be this coming Wednesday, January 22, 2014 with their first match-up with the #3 University of Jamestown (16-1) at the Jamestown Civic Center.  Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
