Comets End Skid in 76-72 Win Over Trinity Bible College

Eight game losing streak comes to a halt in back-and-forth victory.

Mayville, ND – David Olson helped end Mayville State's 8-game losing streak, hitting a go-ahead jumper with 35 seconds left to give the Comets the lead for good.

After a Josh DeWitt steal and split at the free throw line, MSU was up three, 75-72 with 15 seconds left. Easton Page rebounded a missed Jaden Shockley three-pointer and added one more free throw to put the game away.

The Comets were looking up at the Lions for much of this game, trailing by nine points with just under 10 minutes remaining and the momentum seemed to be on the Lions side.

Alex Herman stepped into the game and changed that in a hurry. Back-to-back three point makes by Herman, the Tolna, ND native got the Comets right back into the game and both teams battled back-and-forth from then on until the final buzzer.

MSU tied the game for the first time since late in the first half when Page knocked down two free throws with 5:50 remaining.  Josh Bialik answered on the ensuing possession to give the Lions a 62-60 lead with 5:39 left.

Herman had the answer yet again. Another three-pointer by the guard gave the Comets the lead at 63-62 for the first time since it was 25-23 in the first half.

MSU pushed the lead up to four points on a couple of occasions but the Lions had an answer every time the Comets looked to put the game away. Shockley knocked down a three-pointer after two Michael Lindsay free throws to pull the game back to one point.

AJ Anthony answered a Lindsay basket when the Comets were up three, to draw it within one again. Lindsay scored again on a traditional three-point play to push the lead up to four again.

Bialik and Ben Bighorn followed with two baskets to tie the game once more.

With under a minute remaining the Comets were tied with the Lions 72-72. Olson picked a good time for his first collegiate double-double in this game. It was an even better time to hit a 15 foot jumper from the foul line to give MSU the lead once more, this time it held until the final buzzer.

Offensively the Comets were led by Lindsay with 17 points and six rebounds. Olson followed with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and three assists.

Herman, who hit some huge shots during the Comets comeback, scored 15 points, making five three-pointers in the game. Page was the final Comet in double figures with 11 points and five assists in the game.

The teams were very even statistically in the game. MSU held a slight advantage in rebounds (33-31) and shooting percentage (46 percent to 44 percent). TBC was +2 in turnover differential, but the Comets had their biggest advantage at the foul line.

MSU shot 84 percent at the charity stripe (16-for-19) compared to the Lions 69 percent (9-for-13).

Mayville State (7-14, 0-4 NSAA) is off until Saturday, February 8th, 2014 for their second game with the University of Jamestown. The Comets fell to the Jimmies on January 22nd 63-50.
