The Comets traveled to Madision, South Dakota Saturday to take on Dakota State. MSU opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 32 yard touchdown strike from
Michael Barron to
Dantrel Horne to take a 6-0 lead. Dakota State answered later in the first on a Justin Summers 16 yard touchdown run. Summers scored twice more in the second and Jeremy Christner added a 21 yard touchdown for a 28-6 lead at the half. Barron and Horne connected again, this time for 36 yards early in the third quarter.
John Poppe ran in the 2-pt conversion to cut the deficit to 28-14. Barron tossed his third touchdown of the evening, an 8 yard pass to
Lance Jackson with 8:17 left in the game. That pulled the Comets to within one score, 28-20. The Dakota State defense held the rest of the way, scraping out a 28-20 victory.
Barron led the Comets offensive attack with 220 yards passing and three touchdowns. Horne caught 5 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Jackson hauled in 7 receptions for 78 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side,
Jacob Grosz collected 10 tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. On the Dakota State side, Summers rushed 23 times for 190 yards and three touchdowns, and Cole Potter had 9 tackles and two sacks.Â
The Comets have the following week off, then travel to Ellendale to play Trinity Bible College on 9/13 @ 2pm.
