The Comets football team traveled to Valley City on Saturday looking to stay undefeated in conference plus avenge their only loss of the year. Two touchdown passes and a sterling defense effort gave the Comets a 14-13 victory.
Both defenses proved early and often that points would be at a premium today, as the only scoring in the first quarter game off a Vikings FG. The Comets marched down to VCSU's 4 yard line but were unable to break through on 4th down. Halfway through the 2nd quarter Valley City scored a TD to go up 10-0, which was how the first game unfolded this season. The Vikings were driving again later in the 2nd but were stopped at the 9 yard line on 4th down.Thankfully for Mayville State, they entered halftime suffering no further damage. However, the offense would need to get untracked and fast.Â
Each team opened up the 2nd half with interceptions and punts, but the Comets caught a break when
Skyler Berry recovered a muffed punt at the Vikings 17 yard line. 3 plays later,
Andrew Blake found
Jacob Robbins for a 9 yard touchdown toss. The extra point attempt was blocked, making the score 10-6. Valley City came right back with another field goal, and the Comets entered the final quarter down 13-6. Early in the 4th, Mayville State's
Ryan Henderson recovered a fumble in Viking territory. The Comets cashed in on this fumble as well with a five play drive ending in Blake's 2nd TD of the day, this time a 14 yard strike to
Chris Mayes. The Comets went for the lead and Blake found McMorris in the end zone to take the lead 14-13. The defense took care of the rest as they held Valley City to 3/10 passing with a pick and a sack and held on for the victory.
Blake threw for 202 yards and the two scores,
Martin Stafford rushed for 65 yards, and
Dantrel Horne caught 4 passes for 64 yards. Defensively,
Jason Holmes and Henderson each collected nine tackles,
Joe Guidry and
Nick Xalis recorded interceptions, and Will Irvin,
Matt Self, and
Douglas Koepplin each had a sack. The Comets held Valley to 13 points and 3.1 yards/play for the game.
The win lifts Mayville State's record to 4-1, 2-0 in the NSAA. The Comets are back on the road next week as they head to Iowa to battle Waldorf College.
