The Comets Football team looked to climb over .500 and snap a longtime losing streak to Jamestown on Saturday. The Jimmies were able to force five turnovers and escape with a 20-13 win.
Jamestown got on the board with after a muffed punt return resulted in a safety. On the ensuing kickoff, the Jimmies marched down the field and scored on a short touchdown run to make the score 9-0. The teams traded punts until the middle of the 2nd quarter, when
Andrew Blake found
Dantrel Horne on a 64 yard TD pass to cut the lead to 9-7. Jamestown missed a FG at the end of the half to keep the score at 9-7. Midway through the second half, the Comets capitalized on a bad snap on a punt gave them the ball at the 3 yard line.
Dondrei Hubbard punched it in to give the comets a 13-9 lead. Jamestown connected on a field goal at the end of the quarter to chop the lead to 13-12. Early in the fourth, the Jimmies retook the lead on a short touchdown run, making the score 20-13. Mayville was able to get into the red zone twice to attempt to tie the game, but turnovers short-curcuited both drives, and the Jimmies held on for a 20-13 victory.
Blake passed for 230 yards and a score, Hubbard ran for 75 yards and a TD, and Horne finished with 62 yards and a touchdown. On defense,
Damion Sanders ended with 9 tackles and
Melvin Williams added 1.5 sacks.
The loss drops the Comets record to 3-4, 1-2 in conference. Mayville State is back on the road next Saturday as they travel to #23 Dakota State.
