MAYVILLE, ND - It was a battle of ranked teams as the visiting #8 University of Jamestown Jimmies came to Mayville State to play the #16 Comets on Saturday. Both teams fought hard in a close first-half session, while the second half provided a different story.
In the first half, it was a battle of 3's to start, as the Jimmies hit two right away, answered by
Sydney Gangl's 6-point spurt of her own. The Comets were able to take the lead, only to watch the Jimmies attack with more 3's, hitting six of them in the first quarter, 18 of their 24 point total. The Comets weren't far behind with 20 of their own. The second quarter saw another tight battle as well, as the two ranked teams were both causing turnovers and causing the opposition to go on some short scoring droughts.
Andi Gayner for the Comets started to produce some down low and one from outside, getting seven of the Comets 15 points in the quarter. The Jimmies outscored the Comets by one in the 2nd quarter to take the lead, 40 to 35, heading into half.Â
The second half delivered a stingy battle between the two teams, the Jimmies kept the Comets scoreless for the first 7:30 of the third quarter. Neither team seemed to be scoring a lot with the Jimmies collecting twelve points and the Comets finishing the quarter with only six, fueled by
Kylee Heurung's four free throws in the end of it.
The 4th quarter had both teams boosting their scoring, but it was the Jimmies pulling ahead quickly as their offense was starting to click. The Comets were trying to score, but a majority of their 4th quarter points came from the free throw line. Gayner had 8 of her 18 in the quarter, the Comets had 15 of their 21 points in the quarter from the stripe.  In the end, the Jimmies were victorious, 75-62.
Leading all scorers was the Jimmies' Paige Emmel with 27, going 7-11 on 3's, followed by her teammate Bryn Woodside with 19. For the Comets, they were led by
