MAYVILLE, ND – The Mayville State Comets came ready to play another NSAA game at home, this time versus the Waldorf Warriors on Saturday evening. Coming off a solid win against VIterbo the previous night, the team was looking to lock up another win in the tight conference battle at the top. knew they had some tough competition ahead with Waldorf, who is also near the top of the ranks in the NSAA.
To start things off, the Comets found a rhythm with a string of three straight 3-pointers, two of them in a row by
Daniel Lindgren, one of the key prolific shooters on the team. That helped them jump to an 11-6 lead. Lindgren poured in two more field goals to help lift the lead to 17-10. Waldorf was inching back though, with Kaden Verdin helping the Warriors go on a 6-2 run to narrow the gap, 19-16. Verdin was still a bother to the Comets as the Warriors kept creeping up closer to the Comets lead, adding another five in their effort to narrow it down to 26-25 in favor of the home team. For Coach Tighe, it was time to clamp down on defense and put a halt to the Warriors, with the Comets' own
Garek Droog and
Cameron Epps coming in and helping build the lead up to end the half. A nice 14-4 effort to close out the first half for the Comets helped lift their lead to eleven, the scoreboard reading 40-29.
In the second half, the Comets continued to fire on all cylinders with solid shots from the outside and key looks on the inside. The lead jumped out to 20 point at 57-37, with six Comets contributing along the stretch in the first five minutes of action. The Comets kept the defensive pressure on for the rest of the half with the deep bench of the Comets still contributing on the scoreboard and in other areas on the stat sheets. Lindgren added in another nine points in the half to lead the team and all scorers with 19 on the night. All in all, eleven Comets scored in the game, with four in double figures. The Comets claimed another victory in their NSAA hunt for a conference title, winning the game 90-60 in front of their die-hard fans.
Following
Daniel Lindgren's 19 point performance was
Eric Staebler with 15,
Cameron Epps with 13, and
Gorg Alhag with ten. Lindgren led in rebounds with , followed by Staebler and
Garek Droog with six. Alhag also led the team in assists with five, contributing to a team total of 16 assists. As a team, they were identical in field goal percentage and 3-point percentage, at 47% each. They shot 34 for 71 from the field, and were 10 of 21 from behind the arc.
For the Warriors, Kaden Verdin had a double-double night with 17 points and 15 rebounds. He was followed by Brady Kuchinka with 14 and Brian Smith with ten.
The Comets are now 11-3 overall, 6-1 in the NSAA, at the top of the conference, and are currently on a 4-game winning streak.
Next action for the Comets will be at home on Tuesday, January 9th when they host Trinity Bible College at 7:30 pm.
