MAYVILLE, ND – Coming off a winning weekend of conference games at home, The #23 Mayville State Comets played host to the Trinity Bible College Lions in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse on Tuesday evening. The Comets were looking to keep their winning edge sharp after a hard-fought weekend.
In the first quarter, the Comets came out with a full-court press that caused a host of turnovers for the Lions.
Joelle Ertl started things off with a 3-point bucket right away, followed up with
Andrea Skillingstad getting a bucket down low, and five points in succession by
Karleigh Weber to jump out quickly with a 10-2 run. From that point, the Comets doubled the Lions effort, going on a 20 to 10 run to finish out the quarter.
The pressure continued into the second quarter as the Comets kept the Lions scoreless until a free throw broke the streak with 5:48 to go before the halftime break. The Comets kept up their stingy defense to finish the half out, causing 22 turnovers for the Lions and nabbing the ball away 13 times. The score was 52-21 at the half.
Things in the second half were much of the same. The Comet bench took over and kept up the pressure, limiting the Lions to just five points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. They forced the Lions into 34 total turnovers in the game. All in all, eleven Comets scored in the effort as the team came out on top in strong fashion, 90 to 33.
Coach Hutter felt it was a good game to get some of his players some key playing time. "In a game like this, it's important to still work on getting better, and that includes getting everyone to improve up and down the bench."
Top scorer for the Comets, and also game leader, was
Karleigh Weber with 17, going 7-10 from the field, 3-6 from behind the arc. Following her was
Andrea Skillingstad with a good effort down low with 14 points, shooting 7-8 from the field. Kylee Heuring poured in twelve and
Claire Blascziek added ten. Skillingstad led in rebounds with seven, while Blascziek and Heurung had five steals each. Blascziek also had seven assists in the game to lead the team. For the Lions, Emma Logan had 13 to lead her team and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
