FOREST CITY, IA – The Comets finished out their regular season play in the NSAA by visiting Waldorf University to take on the Warriors on Saturday afternoon.Â
The Comets were hot right way, going on a quick 8-0 run, started by
Karleigh Weber with a three and
Andi Gayner with five straight points. The Comets kept building the lead and showed a strong defensive presence, keeping a 10-point spread throughout most of the quarter.
Joelle Ertl became the hot hand near the end of the first, and continued it through the beginning of the second quarter, scoring eleven points on a 5-5 effort. It helped build the lead to as much as 17, until the Warriors took advantage of some mistakes by the Comets and went on a 7-0 run of their own.
Sydney Gangl broke up the streak with a deep 3-pointer, the Comets finished out the first half with a strong 32-19 lead.Â
The Comets extended their lead to begin the second half, getting it as high as 15.
Andi Gayner was the go-to player for the team in this stretch as she poured in eight of the Comets' twelve points in the quarter. Waldorf answered each bucket in the quarter with points of their own, keeping the lead at 13 with ten minutes to play for the Comets. The lead continued to grow to as much as 19 after a
Kylee Heurung 3-pointer helped keep the Warriors away from being a threat for the remainder of the game. In the end, it was the Comets victorious over the Warriors, 65-49.Â
Coach Hutter was happy with the team's effort tonight, and excited to get back to the Lewy Lee. "Another really solid effort defensively and rebounding. I thought our effort was great tonight considering it was a long trip today and it was the second night of a back to back. We're excited to be at home on Wednesday for the conference tournament."
Leading the Comets with a game-high 21 points was
Joelle Ertl, who also grabbed eight rebounds.
Andi Gayner followed suit with 16 points of her own, and
Naomi Torgerson finished the game with eleven. As a team, the Comets shot 41% from the field and made six 3-pointers on the night. They also shot well from the free throw line, going 15-18 from there. The Comets also had the rebounding edge with 39 to the Warriors' 36.
The Comets finished the regular season with 19 wins and eight losses overall, and a 10-6 record in the NSAA. MSU will host Dakota State in the first round of the NSAAÂ conference tournament on Wednesday night, tipoff is set for 7:00 PM. The winner of that game will head to Saturday's semifinal matchup.Â
