Box Score JAMESTOWN, ND – The #25 Mayville State Comets ventured their way to Jamestown, ND for another NSAA conference battle against the #6 team in the country, the University of Jamestown. The Jimmies have been a force this season and the Comets have also been hanging around the national ranks. It was a big matchup between two of the conference's toughest teams.
It was a hectic first few minutes of the game with the Comets taking a quick 6-4 lead. The Jimmies then scored a frantic nine straight points, causing a timeout by the Comets to get settled down. Kylee Heurung hit a three right away after the timeout, but the Jimmies fired right back with another flurry to go up 21-10. Andi Gayner tried to help the Comets close the gap in the remaining minutes of the quarter, getting the last five for the Comets to only be down by eight, 25 to 17.
The second quarter began unusually quiet on the offensive side from both teams, as only two field goals were put in by the Jimmies in the first five and half minutes of quarter. The Jimmies were able to find ways to the bucket after that point, with the Comets struggling to do the same. Heurung was fouled and put in the lone two points in the quarter for the Comets, as Jamestown finished it out with 13 more points and stayed in the lead, 42 to 19.
Both teams seem to answer each other's scores in the third quarter, although the point spread seemed to be the same. Naomi Torgerson tried to spark the offense for the Comets right away, scoring the team's first seven points in consecutive fashion. However, that was answered by an 8-0 run by the Jimmies. MSU answered it back with seven of their own with a shutdown of the Jimmies in that time frame. UJ called a timeout and then took over the game for good at that point. Gayner was quietly scoring the remaining points for the Comets in the quarter, however the lead continued to grow for the Jimmies well through the end of the quarter and also to the end of the game. In the end, it was the Jimmies out on top to best the Comets for the second time this season, 95 to 54.
Leading all scorers in the game was the Comets' own Andi Gayner with 16, going 8-12 at the free throw line for half of those points. Teammate Naomi Torgerson was right behind with a steady 15. The Jimmies had five players in double figures. A key factor in the game was turnovers, as the Comets collected 25 of them to the Jimmies' eight. The Jimmies also passed the ball well and had 23 assists to only four on the Comets end. The Comets got nearly half their points at the free throw line, netting 23 of 29 to shoot 79%. The Jimmies shot 52% overall from the floor, gaining the edge over the 31% shooting of the Comets.
Next up for the Lady Comets (16-7, 7-5 NSAA) will be at home next weekend, with Dakota State on February 9th and Bellevue on February 10th. Game times at the Lewy Lee will be 5:30 pm and 3:00 pm, respectively.
