Clutch hitting late in the game by Mayville State helped the Comets to a 6-5 victory over Benedictine University at Mesa on Tuesday night. The game was tied at five with the Comets batting in the bottom of the eighth when
Marcus Wohl doubled on a 1-0 count, scoring
Spencer Merle to give MSU the winning run.
The Comets earned the victory despite allowing Benedictine at Mesa to score four runs in the sixth inning. The offense by Benedictine came from Shawn Barrowdale and Travis Hunt homeruns, a 3-run pop over the fence followed by a solo shot.Â
Down 4-1, Mayville State got their first clutch hit of the night in the bottom half of the inning from
Rodney Gilbert. With two on and one out, Gilbert hit a 3-run shot over the left field fence to ties things up at four runs apiece.Â
Benedictine answered that with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Comets came up big and tied things again on an RBI single up the middle from
Jonathon Folena, driving in
Riley Nelson from second to make it 5-5 heading into the 8th.Â
Austin Herrington pitched five and a thirds innings allowing one run on two hits for the Comets.
Osvaldo Escobar was credited with the win for Mayville State after coming in the game in the fifth and going two and two-thirds innings, andÂ
Kalton Agnes was able to shut the door for the Comets by striking out the side to end things.
Mayville State racked up nine hits in the game.

Jonathon Folena each managed two hits, Folena also had two RBIs on the day.Â
Benedictine University at Mesa had eight hits on the day. Travis Hunt and Shawn Barrowdale each racked up multiple hits for the Redhawks.Â
The Comets' next matchup is on Thursday at 12:00 pm (CDT) against Cornell College, then follow that up with a game against Bethesda Univeristy at 8:30 pm (CDT) on Thursday night.Â
