Erik Barron had all the right stuff in Thursday's first game of the day for Mayville State, allowing zero runs and beating Cornell College by a score of 13-0.
Mayville State was able to get the bats going in the first game of the day.
Jonathan Pluth collected five hits in five at bats to help lead the Comets to the big victory. Pluth singled in the first, second, fifth innings, tripled again in the fifth, and singled in the seventh on his way to two RBIs and three runs scored for the winning team.
The Comets notched eight runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the Rams for good. Mayville State's offense in the inning came from RBI triples by
Brady Nygaard and Pluth, an RBI single by
Marcus Wohl, a sac fly by
Riley Nelson, and a double by Zach Foster that scored Pluth to open up the game and give the Comets a 10-0 lead..
Barron got the win for Mayville State after going seven innings, allowing two hits and getting the shutout while striking out nine on the outing.
Tony Clifton took the loss for Cornell College. He lasted two innings, allowing four hits and two runs in his outing.
Mayville State scattered 15 hits in the game.

The bats were quiet for Mayville State in their second game on Thursday night. The Comets found themselves in a 2-0 hole behind Bethesda University by the time the fifth inning rolled around.
It wasn't until an
Austin Monson solo shot in the fifth inning that the Comets got on the board to make it a 2-1 ballgame. But, Bethesda's Benjamin Lopez would end up being too much in the end.
Lopez was able to shut the door down the stretch for the Flames and get the win over Mayville State. He surrendered one run on five hits over nine innings, striking out seven without any walks.
Parker Stohr took the loss for Mayville State, he went four innings, allowing one run on three hits, striking out six.
These two teams will square off again on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm (CDT) for a rematch. That will be the Comets' last game down in Arizona before they head back up to South Dakota on Monday to take on Dakota Wesleyan in a double-header.
