Comets Split Day One Against Midland

Box Score

The Mayville State Baseball team kicked off their spring schedule with a double-header matchup against Midland University bright and early Wednesday morning inside the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn.

Both teams were strong on the mound on Wednesday morning in the early going, but Midland University was able to find some success at the plate in the final inning to get a victory over Mayville State in game one.

A single by Chase Knudson in the third inning was the only hit in the game for Mayville State. Torrey Escamilla pitched well for Midland by giving up the lone hit in seven innings of work, striking out six Comets. Midland's Billy Brand ended up with the win in the last two innings of work after the Warriors strung together some hits and scored two runs in the top of the ninth.

Kalton Agnes took the loss for Mayville State. He allowed five hits and two runs over two innings, walking zero.

Erik Barron started the game for the Comets, he went seven innings, allowing five hits, striking out three and walking one.

Midland University collected ten hits on the day. Justin Trevino and Bailey Bliss each managed multiple hits for Midland. Trevino led the Warriors with three hits in five at bats.

Mayville State was able to wake the bats up in game two of the double-header and jumped out to a lead with three runs in the top of the first. Riley Nelson got things started with a single up the middle followed by a Jonathan Pluth double to left center, Nelson then scored on ground ball to the right side by Jonathan Folena. After a Brady Nygaard walk, Zachary Foster singled to left to score Pluth and Nygaard to make things 3-0.

Midland answered with one in the bottom half of the inning after Tanner Bos singled in Nolan Luzzi on a 1-1 count. From there, both pitchers settled in for a few scoreless innings until the Comets put up another run in the top of the fifth on a single by Foster that scored Folena from second.

Midland answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on Justin Trevino RBI double to right center making it 4-3. That was as close as the Warriors would get as the game had to be cut short due to time constraints in US Bank Stadium.

Mason Swegarden went five innings for the Comets, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out two. Kalton Agnes provided the relief for Mayville State giving up one run on one hit and one strike out. Dakota Cortese went all six innings for the Warriors, giving up four earned runs on five hits and eight strike outs. Cortese also walked four.

Zach Foster led the way for the Comets by going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, Mason Pryzbilla was also able to reach base twice for MSU. Justin Trevino had two RBIs for Midland and Nolan Luzzi reached base twice and scored a run for the Warriors.

Mayville State and Midland will square off once again tomorrow morning at the same time and place. First pitch of game one is set for 6:00 am.
