Erik Barron was brilliant in game one on Thursday night for the Comets, the senior from San Jose, CAÂ threw a complete game shutout to lead Mayville State past Presentation College 1-0 on Thursday night. The pitching was strong on both sides, but Barron was able to win the pitcher's duel and give his team a big conference win.
The Comets were able to get some clutch hitting from
Riley Nelson in the bottom of the seventh inning to score
Chase Knudson for the winning run. It was all set up when
Mason Pryzbilla reached on an error with one out in the inning, then was able to advance to second, Knudson would end up courtesy running for Pryzbilla.Â
Then with two outs, Nelson delivered a base hit to right field to bring in Knudson for the game winner in walk-off fashion.Â
Barron was the winning pitcher in the game. He allowed five hits while completing the shutout over seven innings, striking out eight.
James Lewis took the loss for Presentation College after going six and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out ten and walking one.
Riley Nelson went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Comets at the plate in game one.Â
Mason Swegarden followed things up with a gem of his own for Mayville State in game two, shutting out the Saints again and getting another conference win by a score of 4-0
The Comets got things moving in the second inning when
Spencer Merle tripled, scoring
Chase Knudson. Then
Riley Nelson followed that up with a line drive single to right to bring in Merle to make it 2-0.
That was all Swegarden would need. The senior from Lake Park, MN completed the shutout for the Comets, allowing three hits while striking out nine without giving up a walk.
Mayville State tallied eight hits in the game.
Jonathan Pluth and
Spencer Merle each collected two hits to lead the Comets at the plate in game two, Merle also added an RBI and a run scored.
Strong pitching once again propelled the Comets to the win in the late game on Thursday night and into Friday morning, an early lead powered by an RBI base hit from
Obie Wilder and back-to-back RBI doubles from
Mason Pryzbilla and
Spencer Merle in the second inning was enough for
Austin Herrington and the Comet defense to complete the sweep over Presentation.Â
Austin Herrington surrendered one run on four hits over four innings, striking out six.
Kalton Agnes recorded the last nine outs to earn the save for Mayville State and struck out five Saints in the process.Â
Max Christoff took the loss for Presentation College. He lasted five innings, allowing five hits and three runs.
The Comets are now 9-1 in the North Star and sit in first place in the standings. Coach Berry's team now has conference games against Bellevue and Dickinson State scheduled for next weekend.Â
