VALLEY CITY, ND – Dakota State jumped ahead early in the opening round game of the North Star Conference Tournament, the Comets were never able to dig themselves out of the hole and fell to the Trojans 13-3 on Friday afternoon.
Mayville State struck first to get the game going when
Andrew Hill came across the plate to make it 1-0, but the Trojans answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Hayden Klibee hit a 2-RBI base hit to make it 3-1 after the first.
Dakota State tacked on two more runs in the third, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth before the Comets could respond with a run in the top of the seventh to make it 8-2.
Austin Monson homered over the center field fence for Mayville State's second run,
Jonathan Pluth crossed the plate to add another run in the top of the eighth to make it 8-3.
But, the Trojans put up five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Dakota State the 13-3 win and put the Comets in the elimination round for tomorrow's game.
The Trojan's offense was credited for 15 hits in the game, being led by first basemen Hayden Klibbe who had two hits on the day with four RBI's. Marcos Alvarez homered in the bottom of the third inning to help get the Trojans offense rolling.
Not only did Dakota State have a stellar day offensively, they also had a lot of help from the mound with Garrison Collier pitching a complete game. Collier struck out 10 Comets and allowed just three runs over eight innings.
Mayville State finished with seven hits on the day. Six different Comets had hits in the game, including two by
Andrew Hill.
The Comets will play at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning against the loser of the Waldorf and Presentation game in Valley City, ND.
