The Mayville State women's basketball team welcomed the Jamestown Jimmies into the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse tonight for an early season nonconference matchup. It was a game that was close throughout, but the Comets were able to make enough plays in the in the closing minutes to give them the win in front of the home crowd.
With 1:22 to play in the game,
Cyan Hale drove the lane and delivered a huge bucket to put the Comets up by five. In the next possession, the Jimmies were fouled and hit two free throws to bring them within three to make it 72-69.
A turnover by the Comets on the next play opened the door for the Jimmies with 33 seconds remaining, the Comets fouled and UJ hit two more free throws to bring the score to 72-71 in favor of MSU. With 29 seconds remaining,
Kylee Heurung drilled two free throws to put the lead back to three for the Comets.
Then the Mayville State defense came up big in the closing seconds, forcing tough shots, grabbing rebounds then converting the free throws on the other end of the court.
Claire Blascziek hit four three throws in the closing seconds to keep the lead and seal the game to give the Comets the win over Jamestown, remaining undefeated on the season so far.
To start the game, the Jamestown Jimmies were able to build up a lead in the first half, a bucket from Olivia Anderson made things 30-20 in favor of UJ with 9 minutes left in the first half. But the Comets were able to respond and go on an 11-0 run from that point to take the lead with a little over five minutes to play before half.
From there, things went back and forth and ended up tied at halftime. The second half was close throughout, the largest lead by either team was seven from the Comets right before the end of the third quarter. The Jimmies ended up hitting a three on the opening possession of the fourth quarter to bring things close again. That remained the case until the closing minutes of the game.
Kylee Heurung made the difference tonight with 29 points and 10 boards for the Comets,
Claire Blascziek and
Nicole Bunting followed that with 15 points apiece. Olivia Anderson led things on the other end for Jamestown with 22 points, five rebounds and four steals for the Jimmies.
The Comets will be on the road to Chicago next weekend, facing off against Saint Xavier and Robert Morris for a Friday and Saturday showdown.
