Box Score BEMIDJI, MINN – The Mayville State men's basketball team wrapped up their trip to Bemidji on Saturday, taking on the Oak Hills Christian College Wolfpack at the Bemidji State University Gymnasium. The Comets dominated from start to finish, defeating the Wolfpack 119-56 in non-conference action. Mayville State, with the win, split the weekend, after falling to host Bemidji State University on Saturday.
Mayville State jumped out to an early 14-point lead, 18-4, and never looked back against the Wolfpack, who came into the contest with only five players on the team. It was a contest that allowed Mayville State to bring in their bench players to get quality minutes in a game setting, preparing the Comets for what is anticipated to be an exciting conference schedule.
The Comet defense held Oak Hills to 11 points for a majority of the first half, but when the Wolfpack could score, it was Will Richmond they found in the scoring column.
Simon Ramirez came up big for the Comets, with six three-point field goals, leading all scorers with 26 points. Six Comets were in double figures, with
Latrelle Franklin adding 16,
Thomas Gieske had 14,
Rene Melendez had 12 and
Marin Lisica and
Max Cooper each had 10 points. Each Comet who saw the floor had at least two points—
Malachi Wharry had nine,
Jalen Valverde finished with six,
Christian Kuntz and
Iker Cruz each had five, Kentry Bynum finished with four and
Tobyn Lawson hit one shot for two points.
"It was a good, solid effort by our guys today," Comets head coach
Darren Tighe said. "I really liked how we shared the ball and made good decisions with the basketball."
Mayville State shot 55-point-6 percent from the field, including 16 three-pointers.
Oak Hills was led by Richmond, who had 38 points, and Ronnie Jackson, who finished the contest with 15 points. They shot 38-point-2 percent from the field.
Mayville State is off until Thursday, when they take a trip to Marshall, Minn., to take on the Southwestern Minnesota State University Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Southwest Minnesota State University Recreation/Athletic Facility. On Friday, the Comets will travel to Moorhead, Minn., where they'll take on the Minnesota State University-Moorhead Dragons at 7 p.m. at Nemzek Hall.
