Women's Basketball Season Recap

As the academic year winds down, it's time to look back at the 2018-19 Mayville State Women's Basketball season and celebrate the accomplishments that the players and coaches were able to achieve. The Comets are coming off another successful season as they finished with a winning record for the eighth consecutive season under the guidance of Head Coach Dennis Hutter. MSU finished the season with a 19-8 overall record and they also captured the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Regular Season Championship with an impressive 11-3 record in conference games. Over the past seven years, the Comets have compiled an overall record of 138 -59, as well as an overall NSAA record of 58-31. Mayville State has averaged 19.7 wins a season over the past seven years with those 138 wins. During that same seven year stretch, the team has captured two NSAA Championships, one NSAA Tournament Championship, qualified for the NAIA National Tournament twice and have had three "20 Win" seasons. Coach Hutter has also won NSAA Coach of the Year twice.

TEAM SUCCESS
The Comets captured the regular season NSAA championship with a 72-70 come from behind victory at Valley City State, in the last regular season game of the year. During one point in the season, just before Holiday Break, the Comets had a record of 3-5. After that point in the season, the team went on a streak and won 16 of their last 19 games of the season. Mayville State had great team success within the NSAA and were the number one defensive team in the conference all year long.  They were number one in numerous defensive categories including points per game, defensive FG percentage and defensive three point field goal percentage. It was their commitment to defense that led the team to the success that they had this past season. The Comets won their first two games of the NSAA Conference Tournament, before losing in the Championship game to Bellevue 63-59. With the Comets first round NSAA win over Viterbo, it marked the seventh consecutive season that the team has won their first NSAA Tournament game.  In all seven years of the NSAA Tournament, the Comets have made it to the semi-finals - no other current women's basketball team has accomplished that feat.  The future looks very bright for this team, as they return every player from this past year except senior Joelle Ertl.

INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
This past season was marked with numerous milestone achievements as well as individual awards at the end of the season. Joelle Ertl had an amazing senior season for the Comets.  During an away game at Webber International, Ertl eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for her career. She finished her career with 1,306 career points.  Ertl led the NSAA in scoring by averaging 14.3 points per game, she also was in the top ten in the conference in rebounding with 6.5 boards per game. Ertl was named the NSAA Player of the Year, and was also voted first team All-NSAA by the coaches within the conference.  Ertl was also voted Third Team All-American by the coaches within the NAIA. Kylee Heurung also had a great sophomore year for the Comets, she was voted to the Second All-NSAA Team. Heurung averaged 12.5 points a game, which was good for tenth within the North Star. She also averaged 8.1 rebounds per game, which was good for second in the conference. Claire Blascziek also received some post season attention, receiving Honorable Mention All-NSAA honors. Blascziek had an amazing 1.89 assist to turnover ratio with 100 assists on the season and only 53 turnovers. Her 1.89 assist to turnover ratio was good for second in the conference. With the Comets 82-55 win at Dakota State on February 1st, Coach Hutter captured his 200th career coaching win, all of them occurring at Mayville State. Coach Hutter has an overall coaching record at of 205-177 during his fourteen year Mayville State career. Coach Hutter was also awarded the NSAA Coach of the Year award this past season. It is the second time he has received that award.

TEAM OUTLOOK
The outlook for the 2019-20 Comets Women's Basketball team looks very bright. They will return all of their players except for their lone senior, Joelle Ertl. They are bringing back numerous players that played major minutes for the team, and also played an important role in helping the team to the success they were able to have. It is also a time to see what new players can step into a larger role to try and help the Comets stay on top. It should be an exciting Women's Basketball season both at Mayville State and within the North Star Athletic Association in 2019-20.
